The Great Afrikaner Debate

With few exceptions, the Afrikaner suffers from a moral and spiritual defect — the inability to tolerate dissent. Authoritarian to the verge of stupidity, Afrikaners are unable to condone debate on issues which effect the identity of the nation. For instance: On a number of occasions, I have raised the issue of my “tweede-taal” status with the suggestion that either I am an “Afrikaanser” or an “Afrikander”.

Result: Derided as “‘n uitlander of soutpiel”, I am accused of referring either to a cow, or some kind of a horse. Surely, people who are not Afrikaners as such, are people too? Surely there is room within the broader debate about Dutch Creole, and Gam-Taal to include those of us who identify with the “Anders”, or who “gebruik die taal, nie as ‘n huis taal nie, maar as ‘n Ander-taal?”

“Ek is ‘n Afrikaander.

As for De La Rey? A great man indeed but was he an Afrikaner or an Afrikaander?
