JUST how out-to-lunch South Africa’s media are, can be seen by how the Mail & Guardian have been forced to issue a retraction and apology. On 6 August 2025, the publication published an article under the headline “Mbalula dares US to bring on sanctions against ANC leaders” . “The article incorrectly claimed that AfriForum has advanced a narrative that there is a “genocide” occurring against white South Africans. The organisation has not claimed that there is a genocide. We regret the error and apologise to AfriForum — Editor”
Other news outlets such as the SABC should issue similar statements after the story ran for over a month. You can read my piece here noting that practically nobody except some over-opinionated Americans (Charlie Kirk, not Donald Trump) have made such claims, about what for all intents and purposes is a ‘cumulative atrocity’ affecting the country’s rural areas, one that falls far short of what would ordinarily be construed as a ‘genocide’.
