Nicky Newman of See Thru Media took the majority of the excellent photos in this article and attended the March against Monsanto in Cape Town on Saturday.
According to NIcky, roughly 500-1,000 people participated in the event, which started at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology.
Everyone gathered outside the University, but authorities there asked the demonstrators to leave the premises.

A permit had been obtained for the demonstrators to march from the Cape Tech down to the Parade in the city centre at 11.00 am. However, the police unfortunately changed their minds and the march could then only start at 1.00 pm.

Demonstrators mingled and hung around until finally they were allowed to make the short march through to the Parade. However once underway, they made a great display of banners and placards, denouncing Monsanto and GMOs.

Once they arrived at their destination, police stopped them from standing on the side of the road with placards, so unfortunately only a few people could see the signs and banners carried by the protesters.

Some great speeches were made to the crowds attending and lots of interesting information was shared. Among the speakers were some rural farming groups and people with suggestions and solutions to the problem.

They trustingly buy food for their babies and families with no labeling on the packaging – we need to get this story out to the communities using grassroots media and educational platforms.” Nicky Newman
